The Harley-Davidson® Factory Warranty vs. The H-D™ Extended Service Plan

July 31st, 2021 by

A few weeks ago, a gentleman brought his bike to the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson dealership for repair. For story’s sake, let’s call him John Smith. In order to get John’s motorcycle back in working order, the cost of parts and labor came to a grand total of $7,555.35. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $7,000+ sitting in the bank, and neither did John. However, John didn’t have to spend $7,555.35 to fix his motorcycle, he only spent $50.

Only $50?!?!

Yes, you read that right, Mr. Smith only paid $50 out-of-pocket. Sounds pretty crazy right? I’m sure some of you are already thinking: “How is that possible? Only $50?” or better yet, “What kind of scam are you trying to pitch me?” Well, I can assure you that this scenario is definitely possible and it’s far from a scam. This motorcycle miracle was made possible by Harley-Davidson’s Extended Service Plan.

What is the H-D™ Extended Service Plan (ESP)?

I am so glad you asked. Harley-Davidson’s Extended Service Plan (ESP) is a protective plan a customer can purchase when they buy a brand-new or pre-owned* H-D® motorcycle. The ESP mirrors the factory warranty and can provide a customer with up to 7 years of coverage. That’s 7 years of worry-free riding.

I purchased a brand-new Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, so what’s the difference between the Factory Warranty vs. Extended Service Plan?

Great question! Every new Harley-Davidson motorcycle comes with a two-year, unlimited mileage factory warranty. This means that “an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer will repair or replace without charge any parts found under normal use to be defective in factory materials or workmanship. Such repair or replacement of defective parts will be Harley-Davidson's sole obligation and your sole and exclusive remedy under this limited warranty.(Harley-Davidson Service)

The day after your 2-year factory warranty expires is the day your Extended Service Plan kicks in. While the cost to repair your motorcycle is no longer completely covered by the Motor Company, if you have an ESP, you will only be charged a $50 deductible. In hindsight, one catastrophic breakdown on the road could cost you more than 5 years of the Extended Service Plan.

What does ESP Include?

Harley-Davidson’s Extended Service Plan covers a lot more than just repair costs. Think about this - what if you’re taking a long-distance ride and your bike breaks down on the side of the road halfway through the trip? Well, if you have an ESP, you don’t need to panic.

The H-D™ ESP comes with a reimbursement package that includes the following:

  • $75/day ($750 maximum) for a rental vehicle.
  • $150/day ($450 maximum) for meals and lodging, if more than 100 miles away from home.
  • Up to $200 for towing to an H-D®
    • Don’t know where the closest Harley-Davidson dealership is? Harley-Davidson’s Service Center can direct you to the closest one!
  • If you sell your bike, you can transfer any remaining coverage to the next owner, which may increase the resale value.
  • Optional Tire & Wheel Coverage. For an additional surcharge, this coverage will replace your tires and wheels if damaged by a road hazard. (Note: Customers are able to purchase the Tire and Wheel Coverage without ESP, however purchasing them together is typically more affordable.)

Buying a motorcycle is expensive, why should I spend more money than I have to?

You’re right, buying a motorcycle can be expensive, which is why Las Vegas Harley-Davidson offers a payment plan (Service Payment Plan (SPP)) so that you can afford an ESP if you want one. By providing you with this option, you can ride your motorcycle without the fear of costly repairs. Feel free to contact our Finance Manager to find out more!

What if I didn’t purchase an ESP when I purchased my motorcycle, am I still able to get one?

You can absolutely still purchase an Extended Service Plan so long as it fits the parameters (the motorcycle can’t be older than 15 years, and it has to have less than 60k miles on it.) Just bring your bike to our Las Vegas Harley-Davidson Service Department for a complimentary service inspection and then our Finance Manager can get you set up & ready to go with an ESP warranty.
