Riding Essentials for New Riders
If you’re new to motorcycle riding, it’s important to have the proper gear to ensure your safety as you learn to ride your new bike. Here is a list of essentials no new rider should leave home without:
Essentials for New Harley Riders
1. Motorcycle Helmet
Some states have laws requiring riders to wear a helmet, but even if yours does not, a helmet is recommended. Modern helmets come equipped with a variety of functions, including Bluetooth and speakers, so you can get directions, make calls and listen to music while staying protected.
2. Riding Jacket
A motorcycle jacket is essential to protect you from the elements. There are an endless number of styles to choose from, including meshes and perforated styles, so you’ll be able to keep cool while riding in the heat or keep warm when riding in the cold.
3. High-Top Boots
Have you ever cringed at a rider wearing sandals or athletic shoes, even if you weren’t sure why it was bad? Motorcycle boots provide your feet with a bit of traction and are built to protect your feet and ankles from the harsh realities of the road. You wouldn’t go onto a construction site in flip-flops so don’t ride your motorcycle in them either!
4. Riding Pants
Contrary to popular belief, jeans are not enough to protect you from the elements or prevent injury in the event of an accident. Riding pants are specifically designed to protect your legs. They come in a variety of fabrics, including denim.
5. A Proper Safety Course
The best protection is safe riding. When you enroll in Harley-Davidson’s new rider course, you’ll learn all the basics of acceleration, shifting, braking, turning, and controlling your bike when you encounter obstacles and various types of weather. An added benefit is that many insurance companies offer a discount to riders who have completed a safety course.
